Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
